Chrome furniture has been a staple of interior design since the 1920s and is still a popular choice. But how do you keep your shiny silver surfaces gleaming? We've got all the best tips and hacks to keep your furniture clean and sparkling.
What Works Best For Cleaning Chrome?
Chrome furniture is a pretty big part of what we do at Furniturebox, so we'd like to think we've learnt a few tricks to looking after it over the years. Here are our favourite cleaning supplies:
- Soft, clean microfibre cloth
- Dry tumble dryer sheets (these are a gamechanger!)
- Baking soda (Bicarbonate of soda)
- Mild washing up liquid
- White vinegar and lemon
- Cotton buds or soft toothbrush
- "Pink Stuff"
- Surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol)
Important: Don't Use Bleach
Never us anything harsh on your chrome products as this can strip the chrome plating. Avoid abrasive scrubbing or cleaning products, and harsh chemicals, including bleach.
General Cleaning Tips For Chrome
Chrome is a durable material for pretty much any modern home. But, its shiny surface does mean it's prone to showing up fingerprints and smudges.
Buff up those surfaces with a tumble dryer sheet to remove dust, grime and those pesky fingerprints.
If you have a sticky stain to clean up, dilute some washing-up liquid in warm water, dip a clean and soft cloth into the water and clean the chrome gently. Dry the surface immediately with a microfibre cloth to avoid water stains.
Cleaning Stubborn Stains and Rust From Chrome
For more stubborn stains or rust, give the Pink Stuff a go. Be sure not to scrub or use an abrasive, scratchy cloth, and make sure to clean any residue off and buff with a microfibre cloth or dryer sheet.
You can also try a mix of baking soda/bicarbonate of soda and lemon. A spray solution works well for water stains. A thicker paste can be used for rusted areas - rub in a circular motion over the affected area.
For greasy stains, a dab of surgical spirit on a clean soft cloth or cotton pad rubbed in a circular motion should lift this. Again, be sure to clean the surgical spirit off with water and then dry it immediately to avoid lifting the chrome plating. Also be sure to use surgical spirit, not white spirit!
