This week I've got some kid's bedroom refresh inspiration as the new school year starts. Here are some tips and ideas for easy budget-friendly updates that can grow as your child does, along with my best Furniturebox kid’s bedroom pieces.

It’s September and that means one thing - Back To School! I loved new term time! New uniform, new timetables, new pencil case! But, that might just be me… It is, however, a great time for a bedroom refresh for your kids, to tie in with the general ‘fresh start’ that September brings.  Whether you’ve got a first-time-at-schooler, a new-to-Secondary, a college starter or even a new Uni student on your hands, a well-organized and thoughtfully designed space can make a world of difference in their focus, relaxation, and overall well-being. I’ve got my thinking cap on and come up with some tips to help you create a functional yet stylish bedroom that your child, whatever their age, will love.

Choosing the Right Bed For Your Kid’s Bedroom Refresh

The bed is the centrepiece of any bedroom, and for kids and teens, it’s important to find one that’s both comfortable and stylish. Consider upgrading to a bed with built-in storage to maximize space. For younger children, a single bed with drawers underneath is great for stashing toys or clothes. Teens might appreciate the extra space of a double bed, especially if it comes with a sleek, modern design. Our Azure beds are always a best seller – sturdy and durable solid wood, with the option of adding under-bed storage. Alternatively, our fabric-upholstered bed frames all have 29cm clearance under the bed for some slimline sliding storage.

Versatile Storage Solutions

A clutter-free room is key to creating a calm and productive environment. Invest in multi-functional furniture like ottomans with storage, wall-mounted shelves, and under-bed storage boxes. Our Siena rotating desk can be flattened against a wall or pulled out into an L-shape corner desk, and the storage shelves can be folder beneath the desk for compact spaces (or to free up space for playing!). These solutions help keep the room tidy and provide easy access to school supplies, books, and personal items. Our Teksi metal locker-style cabinets and bedside tables provide some fun and very on-trend storage options. A flat-top cabinet can double as a TV stand, or space for toys.

Creating a Study Space In A Kid’s Bedroom

A dedicated work area will help kids to feel like they have their own space for homework and study (or gaming in their down time). Choose a desk that fits the room’s size and your child’s needs. Add a comfortable office chair that supports good posture. A desk lamp with adjustable brightness can help reduce eye strain during late-night study sessions. Our Ivan Scandi-inspired desk is simple yet sturdy, light and airy with plenty of tabletop space for arts and crafts or essay writing.

Selecting the Right Colour Palette For Your Kid’s Bedroom Makeover

Colours play a significant role in setting the mood of a room. For a calming and focused environment, consider using soft, neutral tones. These colours can help reduce stress and improve concentration. Adding pops of brighter colours through cushions, rugs, and wall art can inject personality and energy into the space. I really like a green and grey combo with lots of white and warm wood for a kid's bedroom. It gives a Scandi-inspired look that works for any gender and can be adapted easily as your child grows.

Other Things To Consider

Personal Touches - Encourage your child or teen to add personal touches to their room. It’s really important for children of any age to feel like they have their own space in a bustling household that makes them feel safe and also motivated. This could be through posters, photos, or DIY projects. Incorporate elements that reflect their interests and hobbies, whether it’s a music-themed wall or a cosy reading nook.

Lighting Matters - Good lighting is a big element of relaxation and productivity. Natural light is the best, so make sure windows are unobstructed. If you have the space, place a desk in front of the window for maximum study-focus. For artificial lighting, a combination of a main overhead light, mood lighting (like fairy lights or RGB strips) + lamps work well. Mirrors are also a great way to bounce light and add some wall decor.

Final Thoughts

I think the most important thing to keep in mind with any kid's bedroom is to keep it flexible. As children grow, their needs and tastes change. So, it's worth choosing furniture and decor that can easily be updated or repurposed. Modular furniture and removable wall decals and versatile storage solutions can adapt to their evolving preferences. Wall-mounted shelving can be used for showing off favourite toys and books or for educational displays when kids are small, and then be updated with more books, keepsakes or photos etc. as the child grows up.
