Halloween Decor Ideas For A Spooky-Chic Home

As the nights grow longer and the air turns crisp, it’s time to embrace the spooky season and transform your home into a Halloween haven. Whether you’re hosting a haunted house party or just want to add a touch of eerie elegance to your space, I’ve got some spine-chilling Halloween decor ideas for you!

Halloween is one of my favourite times of year. It’s an excuse to dress up, be a bit silly, tell a few spooky tales and embrace the darker half of the year without the expectations (and price tag!) of the big family gatherings like Christmas or New Year. Granted, I never really grew out of my weird goth kid phase, but Halloween doesn’t have to be outright terrifying, either, if that’s not your thing. Halloween can be just as much about whimsical fun and bright colours. I love decorating for Halloween, and I thought it would be fun to pull together a little how-to / inspiration guide for Halloween decor with some help from our always-creative customers.

Gothic Glamour For Your Halloween Home

OK, hands down this is my favourite. This, right here, is my vibe. I would live in a house like this if I could, but my husband would probably disown me. Channel your inner Morticia Addams with a touch of gothic glamour. Think dark, rich colours like deep purples, blacks, and burgundies. Velvet stools and cushions, ornate candelabras and antique mirrors can add a luxurious yet eerie vibe to your living room. If you’ve already got a bit of a dark maximalist décor style, you might well have a few items already scattered around that you can collect into a spooky window display. A stack of old books, some candles (fake, preferably, if we’re anywhere near books), some draped lace and you’ve got yourself a witch’s apothecary tablescape or window dressing.

Halloween Decor Gives Pumpkin Perfection

Pumpkins are a Halloween staple, but why not give them a chic twist? Instead of the traditional orange, paint your pumpkins in metallic shades like gold, silver, or black. Arrange them in clusters on your mantelpiece or dining table for a sophisticated yet spooky centrepiece. For an added touch, carve intricate designs or use stencils to create unique patterns. Alternatively, add some pumpkin-shaped cushions for a chic little seasonal nod to your favourite chair or reading nook.

Add A Haunted Forest To Your Halloween Decor

Bring the outdoors in with a haunted forest theme. Use branches, twigs, and dried leaves to create eerie arrangements. Place them in tall vases or hang them from the ceiling with fishing wire to create a woodland feel. Add some faux cobwebs and fake spiders to complete the look. This theme works particularly well in entryways and hallways or in dining rooms over a table!

Spooky Banquet Tablescape Ideas For Your Dining Table

Set the scene for a Halloween feast with a spooky banquet dining table. Use a black tablecloth as your base and layer it with dark, textured runners, then add vintage-style tableware and gothic-inspired glassware. Or, you could lean into a lighter, more whimsical and less scary look with a pumpkin-themed tablescape just like our customer @athome_withsammi has with this gorgeous tablescape on our Cotswold solid wood dining table. I am a huge fan of this look. It's light, airy and magical but still captures the spirit of the season.

Halloween Decor Lighting For A Ghostly Glow

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a spooky atmosphere. Swap out your regular bulbs for dim, warm-toned ones. Use string lights, lanterns, and candles to cast eerie shadows around your home. You can hang battery-powered candles from your ceiling with fishing wire to give the illusion that they’re floating – we did this last year in our front window and the local kids loved it.

Our customer @houseofpru is never one to shy away from a bold look and their bar area is looking frightfully spooky with this stunning lighting! Featuring our Mayfair white high gloss and stainless steel dining table.

Wickedly Welcoming Entrances

Make a lasting first impression on any passersby or trick-or-treaters with Halloween-decked entryway. If you’ve got a porch, you could stack some pumpkins beside lanterns or hang some ‘floating’ candles/witches’ hats (the trick is fishing wire that makes them look like they’re floating).

If you don’t have much kerb-space, you can decorate your front windows instead (or as well. Who am I to tell you what’s too much when it comes to Halloween décor?). You can make awesome spooky silhouettes like ghosts, witches, Jack-o-Lanterns etc out of black construction paper or split-open bin bags. Or, if you’re feeling artistic, use some washable glass pens to draw some window graffiti!

Terrifying Textiles Are A Quick Win For Your Halloween Decor

Switch out your regular cushions and throws or bedding for ones with Halloween motifs. Think black cats, skulls, and witches. Faux fur throws in dark colours can add a cosy yet spooky touch to your beds or sofas. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns and textures to create a layered, haunted look. @athomewithkirsty_ adds some cute ghost textiles to her bed to get into the spooky season.
